Jeep . How to Wire a Jetstream LightbarIf you use your vehicle for emergency services such as fire rescue or tow truck operations, you will need to install an emergency lightbar on top of your vehicle to let other drivers know you are on the road. The Federal Signal company produces a line of lightbars called Jetstream which can be installed on your own in a few hours of spare time. You will need to wire the lightbar to your vehicle in order for it to work properly. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Control head Wire strippers Wire connectors 50 amp fuse Step by Step : 1 Run the control cable from the lightbar through the interior of the car to the lightbar control head that should already be installed under your dashboard. Connect the end of this cable into the port on the back of the control head. This will allow you to turn the lightbar on and off while driving. 2 Run the black or negative power wire from the lightbar to the interior of the car. This wire will need to be connected to a piece of bare metal in order to ground the lightbar. To do this, use the wire stripper to expose about one inch of wire and wrap it around the metal. Ensure that the wire is wrapped securely and will not come loose while operating the vehicle. 3 Connect the red or positive power wire from the lightbar to the 50 amp fuse. To do this, use the wire stripper to cut the wire in half. Strip the ends of both wires and insert the ends into the ends of the fuse. This fuse will prevent electrical damage in case of a surge. 4 Run the end of the red power wire through the interior of the vehicle. You can connect the end of this wire to a 12 volt power supply. There are a few options to do this, including stripping the wire and splicing it with the power wire running to your ignition switch with the wire connector. You can also wrap the end of the wire directly around the positive terminal on your battery.
Jeep . How to Wire a 7 Point Trailer Plug for Lights & BrakesSeven terminal trailer plugs come in two different varieties. One variety uses flat pins and the other uses round pins. The wiring is different for the two types of connectors, so each will be described separately. The flat pin style is the standard type, while the round pin style is very rare, but might be encountered. The wire color codes are just a guide, and may be different on your trailer. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Wire Cutter/StripperFlat Terminal Connector Step by Step : 1 Cut each wire close to the end and strip about 3/8 inch of insulation from each. 2 Position the connector so the keyway cutout is facing down. Looking at the back of the connector, there are six terminals around the edge at one, three, five, seven, nine and eleven o'clock positions, and one terminal in the center. The screw terminals can be tightened with a screwdriver. 3 Connect the 12 volt battery power wire (usually black) to the terminal at the one o'clock position. 4 Connect the right turn and brake light wire (usually green) to the terminal at the three o'clock position. 5 Connect the brake controller wire (usually blue) to the terminal at the five o'clock position. 6 Connect the ground wire (usually white) to the terminal at the seven o'clock position. 7 Connect the left turn and brake wire (usually yellow) to the terminal at the nine o'clock position. 8 Connect the tail and running lights wire (usually brown) to the terminal at the eleven o'clock position. 9 Connect the reverse lights wire (usually purple) to the terminal at the middle of the connector. Round Pin Connectors Step by Step : 1 Cut each wire close to the end to make a clean cut and strip about 3/8 inch of insulation from each. 2 Position the connector so the keyway cutouts are facing down. Looking at the back of the connector, there are six terminals around the edge at twelve, two, four, six, eight and ten o'clock positions and one terminal in the center. The largest terminal should be at the twelve o'clock position. The screw terminals can be tightened with a screwdriver. 3 Connect the ground wire (usually white) to the terminal at the twelve o'clock position. 4 Connect the 12 volt battery power wire (usually black) to the terminal at the two o'clock position. 5 Connect the right brake and turn wire (usually green) to the terminal at the four o'clock position. 6 Connect the reverse lights wire (usually purple) to the terminal at the six o'clock position. 7 Connect the left brake and turn wire (usually yellow) to the terminal at the eight o'clock position. 8 Connect the tail and running lights wire (usually brown) to the terminal at the ten o'clock position. 9 Connect the brake control wire (usually blue) to the terminal in the center of the connector. *Part lll: KeeP'n9 Your Car in ^ood Condition, System by System Although it's possible to do most of the work in this chapter yourself — it's not terribly complicated — I don't think that you should do major brake work without supervision. If you don't get things back properly, you risk losing much more than you gain! However, if, after reading this chapter, you simply can't stand the idea of having a total stranger replace your worn brake linings, you can always get yourself to a good auto repair class and do the work under an instructor's watchful eye. Auto classes generally have the hydraulic hoists, brake lathes, and other expensive equipment that you need to do a really good job. So even if you're sure that you need no further instruction after reading my enlightened and crystal-clear prose, having the equipment and the instructor's expertise available is still worth the price of enrollment. Extending the Life of \lour Brakes Riding your brakes causes them to wear out prematurely. The excess heat can also warp disc brake rotors and brake drums. Although being cautious is always a good policy, try to anticipate stopping situations well enough in advance to be able to slow down by releasing the pressure on your gas pedal and then using your brake pedal for that final stop. In slippery conditions — or situations that call for slowing down rather than stopping — if you have traditional brakes, pump your brake pedal to reduce speed and avoid sliding rather than jamming on your brakes and 809

If the road is slippery and your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), don't pump the brake pedal; simply apply firm, steady pressure and keep steering. Checking \lour Brake System Let's start by going over the brake system in your vehicle and checking each part for wear and proper performance. If it's safe for you to do the necessary work, I'll tell you how to do it. If you need professional help, I'll tell you what the work should probably entail so that you don't end up paying for more work than is necessary. Check your brakes every 10,000 to 20,000 miles, depending on the age of your vehicle, the history of its brakes, and how much stop-and-go driving you do. Jeep . Who invented the horsecart?

Subaru Loyale. * If you tend to ride your brakes (keep your foot on the brake pedal when you drive), they're getting more than normal wear and should be checked more frequently. .Chapter 18: Being a Buddy to Your Brakes and Bearings Use extreme caution when checking vehicles with anti-lock brake systems. Some anti-lock systems are pressurized by an electric pump, and there may be more than 2,000 psi pressure in certain parts of the system! Checking your brake pedal If you're like most people, you're usually aware of only one part of your brake system: the brake pedal. You're so familiar with it, in fact, that you can probably tell if something's different just by the way the pedal feels when you put on the brakes. When you check your brake pedal, you simply do the same thing you do every time you drive: You step on the pedal and press it down. The only difference is that, this time, you pay attention to how the pedal feels under your foot and evaluate the sensation you get. The following steps tell you what to look for. Note: If your vehicle is equipped with power brakes (most are), check the brake pedal with the engine running. 1. With the car at rest, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. Does it feel spongy? If so, you probably have air in your brake lines. Correcting this problem isn't difficult; you can probably do the job yourself with the help of a friend. For instructions, see "Bleeding Your Brakes" later in this chapter. Jeep . What is the country of Origin of the chevrolet?

If the pedal sinks, your master cylinder may be defective, and that's unsafe. 2. Drive around the block, stopping every now and then (but without driving the people behind you crazy). Notice how much effort is required to bring your car to a stop. If you have ordinary self-adjusting brakes, the pedal should stop more than 3 inches from the floor. If you have power brakes, the pedal should stop an inch to an inch and a half from the floor. If your vehicle has power brakes and stopping it seems to take excessive effort, you may need a new power booster. 3. If you feel that your brakes are "low" (that the pedal goes down too far before the vehicle stops properly), pump the brake pedal a couple of times as you drive around. Does the pedal now stop higher up? If so, a brake adjustment is probably in order — or you may just need more brake fluid. Check the brake fluid level by following the instructions in "Checking your master cylinder," later in this chapter. '>art'"" keeping ^our Car m Good Condition, System by System If the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder is low, buy the proper brake fluid for your vehicle (see "Flushing and Changing Brake Fluid" later in this chapter for tips) and add fluid to the "Full" line on your master cylinder. Check the fluid level in the cylinder again in a few days. If it's low, check each part of the brake system, following the instructions in this chapter, until you find the leak, or have a brake specialist find it and repair it for you. If you find that you're not low on fluid and if you can't adjust them yourself, drive to your friendly service facility and ask them to adjust your brakes. After that, the pedal shouldn't travel down as far before your car stops. Disc brakes self-adjust and should never need adjusting. Drum brakes, Jeep . What is drum brake made from and why?
